Gražiausia rudens šventė mokiniams ir mokytojams – Tarptautinė mokytojų diena. Mokytojams tą dieną skiriami šilčiausi žodžiai ir gražiausi rudeniniai žiedai. Juos pagerbia ne tik mokiniai ir jų tėvai, bet mokytojams išskirtinį dėmesį parodo ir šalies bei rajono vadovai.
Kadangi Kultūros centro salė remontuojama, pagrindinis Mokytojų dienos renginys persikėlė į Technologijų ir verslo mokyklos salę. Čia besirenkančius viso rajono mokytojus pasitiko gausus būrys Antano Smetonos gimnazijos gimnazistų ir sienelė, prie kurios fotografams noriai pozavo visi susirinkę į iškilmes. Beje, baigiantis renginiui, visi nusifotografavę galėjo savo nuotraukas pasiimti.
Renginio svečių kalbas, Antano Smetonos gimnazijos choro dainas, moksleivių sveikinimo žodžius papildė mokytojų apdovanojimai. Buvo pagerbti trys geriausi rajono pedagogai, suteikiant jiems geriausio Ukmergės rajono 2016 metų mokytojo vardą. Kandidatus geriausio mokytojo vardui gauti pasiūlė pačios mokyklos, juos apsvarstė rajono Švietimo taryba, kandidatūroms pritarė savivaldybės taryba. Geriausiems mokytojams bus skirtos 10 BMA (355 Eur) premijos.
Geriausiais mokytojais tapo Marina Aukštuolienė, Jono Basanavičiaus gimnazijos fizikos mokytoja. Mokytojos pedagoginio darbo stažas – 30 metų. Nuo 2001 metų ji turi mokytojo metodininko kvalifikaciją. 2016 m. du jos mokiniai laikė fizikos egzaminą. Vienas jų gavo 100 balų įvertinimą.
Sporto centro sporto mokytojas Artūras Sakas dirba nuo 1996 metų. Dziudo skyriaus mokytojo metodininko auklėtiniai kasmet pasiekia aukštų sportinių rezultatų. 2013 m. ISBA Pasaulio jaunių dziudo čempionate iškovota I vieta, 2014 m. – Europos Sąjungos šalių jaunimo sambo čempionate – I vieta, 2015 m. Europos sambo kadetų čempionate – III vieta, 2016 m. Europos jaunių sambo čempionate – II vieta. A. Sakas yra Lietuvos sambo jaunių-kadetų rinktinės treneris.
Antano Smetonos gimnazijos anglų kalbos mokytoja Daiva Vaišvilienė gimnazijoje dirba nuo 2004 metų. 2016 m. du jos mokiniai egzaminą išlaikė 100 balų. Ji mokinius ruošia rajoninėms anglų kalbos olimpiadoms, dalyvauja rajoniniuose ir respublikiniuose konkursuose, ne kartą juose nugalėjo.
Taip pat 9 mokytojai apdovanoti Švietimo ir mokslo padėkos raštais, 14 mokytojų ir du kolektyvai apdovanoti rajono mero Rolando Janicko padėkos raštais, 48 – rajono savivaldybės administracijos Švietimo ir sporto skyriaus vedėjos padėkos raštais.

Įpusėjus rudeniui galima prisiminti skaičius, kokie bus 2016-2017 mokslo metai. Šiuos mokslo metus rajone pradėjo 29 švietimo įstaigos: 17 bendrojo ugdymo mokyklų, 6 lopšeliai-darželiai, 2 universalūs daugiafunkciai centrai, 2 švietimo pagalbos įstaigos – Pedagoginė – psichologinė tarnyba ir Švietimo centras, viena Meno mokykla ir vienas Sporto centras.
Mokyklose mokosi 323 pirmokai (2015-2016 m. m. jų buvo 339), 1-4 klasėje – 1261 mokinys (2015-2016 m. m. jų buvo 1305), 5-8 klasėse – 1311 (2015-2016 m. m. jų buvo 1305), 9-10 klasėse – 679 (2015-2016 m. m. jų 743), 11-12 klasėse – 554 (2015-2016 m. m. jų buvo 575). Viso šiais mokslo metais yra 3805 mokiniai, praeitais mokslo metais jų buvo 3892. Yra 1029 ikimokyklinukai ir 304 priešmokyklinukai. Sporto centre treniruotes lanko 655 moksleiviai, Meno mokyklos Dailės, Muzikos skyrius ir šokio pamokas lanko 626 mokiniai.
2016 m. sausio 1 dienos duomenimis rajone dirba 685 pedagogai: 7 ekspertai, 242 metodininkai, 346 vyr. mokytojai, 28 mokytojai, 62 neatestuoti. Ugdymo įstaigoms vadovauja 54 vadovai: 5 neatestuoti, 24 II vadybinės kvalifikacinės kategorijos, 25 – III-ios.
Brandos egzaminus laikė 410 abiturientų, rajone gauta 17 šimtukų (2015 m. – 24). Praėjusiais mokslo metais Pagrindinio ugdymo pasiekimų patikrą laikė 392 (matematika) ir 394 (lietuvių kalba) dešimtokai. 10 balų įvertinimus iš matematikos gavo 21 (2015 m. – 30), lietuvių kalbos – 18 (2015 m. 20) dešimtokai.
Respublikinėje Moksleivių dainų šventėje „Tu mums viena“ dalyvavo 250 mūsų rajono moksleivių: Želvos gimnazijos jaunučių choras (vadovas Vilmantas Driukas), Antano Smetonos gimnazijos mišrus jaunimo choras (vadovė Jūratė Martinkutė), Meno mokyklos jaunučių (vadovė Daiva Petrikienė) ir jaunių chorai (vadovė Giedrė Karklelytė), pučiamųjų orkestras (vadovas Ričardas Kamarauskas), liaudiškos muzikos kapela (vadovas Jonas Bareikis), Užupio pagrindinės mokyklos liaudiškų šokių kolektyvas „Riešutėliai“ (vadovė Ramunė Radzevičienė) ir Ukmergės kultūros centro merginų tautinių šokių kolektyvas „Vilkmergė“ (vadovė Regina Zabielienė). Jungtiniam dainų šventės chorui dirigavo Antano Smetonos gimnazijos muzikos mokytoja ekspertė, rajono garbės pilietė Jūratė Martinkutė.
2015/2016 m. m. rajone įgyvendintos 45 neformaliojo vaikų švietimo programos, kuriose buvo užimta 960 mokinių. Ypač mokinius sudomino naujos NVŠ veiklų sritys: jūrų skautų veikla, robotika, techninio modeliavimo, lego žaidimai.
Moksleiviams vasarą buvo skirta apie 56 000,00 Eur. Lėšos buvo skiriamos iš Ukmergės rajono savivaldybės biudžeto (20 tūkst. Eur), ŠMPF projekto TAPK (11,3 tūkst. Eur), tėvų ( globėjų), rėmėjų (17 tūkst. Eur), valstybės (7,7 tūkst. Eur). Vasaros metu įgyvendintos 22 programos – 15 dieninių, 7 – stacionarios (viena iš jų – tarptautinė). Stovyklose buvo užimta daugiau kaip 800 moksleivių.
Prisiminus sporto pasiekimus, reikia paminėti, kad rajono mokinių sporto žaidynėse savo grupėse nugalėjo Jono Basanavičiaus gimnazija, „Šilo“ pagrindinė mokykla, Taujėnų gimnazija ir Vidiškių pagrindinė mokykla. Lietuvos mokyklų žaidynių kaimo vietovių gimnazijų grupėje Taujėnų gimnazija užėmė 4 vietą tarp 92 Lietuvos mokyklų. Ukmergės rajonas Lietuvos mokyklų žaidynėse (savo grupėje) iš 25 rajonų yra 18 vietoje.
Pastatų renovacijai praeitais mokslo metais skirta: iš Valstybės investicijų programos (VIP) – 334 tūkst. eurų Jono Basanavičiaus, Siesikų gimnazijoms, Užupio pagrindinei mokyklai. Apie 250 tūkst. eurų paskirta Deltuvos pagrindinei mokyklai, apie 25 tūkst. eurų Pabaisko pagrindinės mokyklos sporto salei, apie 95 tūkst. eurų mokyklų valgykloms, apie 50 tūkst. eurų lopšelio – darželio
„Eglutė“ tvorai ir kt.
